To qualify, you must be 18 years of age or older and must be an Australian citizen or a permanent resident. There are minimum income requirements that depend on the type of credit card application you're filling out. For standard cards, the required minimum income will vary around $20,000 per annum. Premium cards such as Gold credit cards will require a higher annual income so be realistic about the card you apply for. You will also need to have a good credit rating.
What you need
You should be ready with the following information:
- Driver's licence number (if you have one)
- Employer details (name, contact address and phone number); if self-employed, your accountant's details
- Details on your earnings (from all sources) and your spending; if self-employed, your latest tax information

What happens next
Once you have provided all the information required in the online credit card application form, you will receive an e-mail message about the outcome, sent to the address you provided. The message will usually contain an Application Reference Number, which you quote when you inquire about your application. Generally, once your credit card application has been approved you will receive the credit card in about three working days.
The online approval is, in a sense, conditional. The bank has to verify the details you provided and conduct a credit check. If there is a need for you to provide copies of your tax information, income, and other details, you will likely be advised to bring these to the bank's branch office nearest you or you may be able to fax, email or post copies.
